What is Paper GSM?
GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter, measuring the density and basis weight of paper stock. Selecting the correct GSM dictates the tactile quality, durability, fold performance, and structural integrity of your printed collateral.
Substrate GSM Classification Spectrum
- 70 - 90 GSM: Lightweight uncoated paper ideal for internal office documentation, transaction receipts, and high-volume book text blocks.
- 100 - 130 GSM: Standard commercial grade for corporate letterheads, multi-page booklet inner pages, and mass-market promotional flyers.
- 150 - 170 GSM: Premium coated paper offering high opacity and minimal show-through, optimal for luxury brochures and posters.
- 250 - 350 GSM: Heavy cardstock and paperboard engineered for business cards, presentation folders, greeting cards, and rigid covers.
Technical Selection Factors
Beyond GSM, evaluate caliper (thickness), grain direction (for clean folding without fiber cracking), surface finish (gloss, matte, velvet), and opacity to ensure flawless runnability on high-speed presses.
